Radiotherapy is used to treat abnormal cell growth and proliferation in a variety of clinical situations. It has an important role in the management of functioning and non-functioning pituitary adenomas, craniopharyngioma and other parasella tumours. However, advances in the surgical and medical management of these conditions, together with improved access to MRI, are driving us to review the position of radiotherapy in integrated treatment programmes.
This lecture will provide a background on the mechanisms of action, different modalities and efficacy of radiotherapy in pituitary disease. A number of cases will be presented with a view to applying this background in a simulated clinical setting (with audience participation).
