Society for Endocrinology Certificate in
Adult Endocrine Nursing
This scheme aims to:
- identify and recognise nurses who have worked on their development
as endocrine nurses
- promote good practice in patient care and clinical management
- encourage clinicians to look for that certificate when promoting
and appointing staff
- encourage nurses to participate as equal partners in the endocrine
community
- improve the options for networking
The certificate comprises the following 4 compulsory elements
each attracting its own credits with 8 credits being required in total:
- Abstract submission = 2 possible credits
1st author = 2 credits
Other nurse authors = 1 credit
Oral communication by a nurse = 2 credits (regardless of length of presentation)
- National Endocrine Nursing Conference = 1 credit per year with 3 being
required in total
- Attendance at November or SFE BES meeting = 1 credit per event
with 2 being required in total
- Either
Final essay of 1000 min 3000 max words = 1 credit
Title to be ‘My contribution to good endocrine nursing practice’.
Talk to be presented at the nurses’ session at a November or SFE BES
meeting plus award of certificate.
Initially to be judged by Council representative, Chairman of Nurses Committee
plus one other panel member. Eventually to be judged by 3 certificate holders
plus Council representative.

Preparation of a portfolio, validated by line manager, to show
areas of expertise covered and the amount of expertise gained.

Members must be in good standing with their membership subscription throughout
the period and may use attendances at conferences backdated to the
BES 2001 meeting.
Annual National Endocrine Nursing Conference
The Committee organises an annual conference, which alternates between a northern and a southern venue. The next conference will be held 8-10 September 2008 in Exeter on the topic of the Pituitary Gland. Topics covered over a four year period are:
- The pituitary gland – function, disease and treatment
- The thyroid gland
- Growth and development of the endocrine system
- Reproduction - from birth to the menopause
Details of the conferences are circulated each year to members and are available on this web site in May each year.
The 2008 conference is being held on 8-10 September at the University of Exeter, the focus being The pituitary gland - function, disease and treatment.
