Postgraduate Essay Prize 2009

We are delighted to announce that the Society received 21 entrants for this new postgraduate essay competition for the first deadline in September 2009. Each submission was assessed by a distinguished panel who marked and ranked each essay. The Society’s Education representative to Council oversaw the marking and ranking process and was highly impressed with the quality of essays submitted.

Ultimately there could only be one winner, and this year the top prize of £1000 was awarded to Kylie Beale, who is currently studying at Imperial College London, for her essay entitled: Can your fat your fat make you thin? (pdf) (119kb)

The Society also awarded £250 to the following two runner up entrants:

  • Errol Richardson (London) – Darwin’s hormonal problem
  • Emma Wilmot (Leicester) – Get up, stand up!

The following three applicants were awarded a ‘highly commended’ certificate:

  • Charlotte Boughton (London) – A breath of fat air ....
  • Simon Biddie (Bristol) – Breaking the code to tackle hormone-dependent cancers personally
  • Madhu Prasai (Leeds) – A clockwork mouse!  Type 2 diabetes, obesity and the rhythms of time
