We have recently mapped an important polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) susceptibility allele. We propose that hyperandrogenemia resulting from variation in gene(s) regulation steroidogenesis contributes to PCOS reproductive and metabolic phenotypes by programming actions at critical periods of development as well as by ongoing actions in the adult.
