Obesity: Fat of the land or land of the fat?

Obesity is a growing concern – warnings that half the UK population will be obese within 25 years fall on deaf ears, large stomachs and sweet teeth.  “My metabolism’s slow”, “All my family are big”, “I’ll get a tummy-tuck”.  Scientific fact, greed or denial? Contribute to the debate led by BBC Radio 4’s Quentin Cooper and experience what it feels like to gain 10kg. Can science solve the problem of Britain’s ever-expanding waistlines?

Talks include:
  • Obesity: a weighty issue – Prof Ian MacDonald, University of Nottingham
  • Are my genes to blame when my jeans don’t fit? – Dr Giles Yeo, University of Cambridge
  • How your fetal and infant nutrition affected your weight – Dr Helen Budge, University Hospital Nottingham
  • A gut feeling – Dr Rachel Batterham, University College London
  • Obesity: tackling the issues – A debate led by Quentin Cooper and featuring Dr Carel Le Roux (Imperial College London), Ms Gill Fine (Food Standards Agency), Prof Ron Maughan (Loughborough University) and Dr Alexandra Johnstone (Rowett Research Institute)
