Steroids Special Interest Group
Background
The steroid special interest group (SIG) was set up in 2004 led by Dr John Honour. John has now come to the end of his term as convenor and his role was taken over by a pair of co-convenors’ – Professor Wiebke Arlt (Birmingham) and Dr Mike Wallace (Glasgow) towards the end of 2007. The new convenors have a longstanding research interest in steroids, both with regard to clinical and biochemical aspects. Wiebke is Professor of Medicine and MRC Senior Clinical Fellow at the University of Birmingham (w.arlt@bham.ac.uk). She heads a research group focussing on pre-receptor metabolism of sex steroids and has a major interest in adrenal and gonadal disorders. Mike is a Consultant Clinical Scientist, who heads the Endocrine Laboratory at Glasgow Royal Infirmary (MWallace@gri-biochem.org.uk).
Actions
- To establish a register of the specific interests of members
- To provide a bulletin board for members to include the exchange
of ideas, plans, recruitment of patients, patient materials etc
- To offer a forum to look for collaborations and partnerships
- To generate a united mechanism to source supplies of steroids
- To discuss/meet/organise symposia covering areas of common interest
with the other SIG’s.
- To provide information aimed at the public to aid understanding
of the science underlying the production in the body, uses, actions
and abuse of steroids
Future
To help us grow together and even more so to get your input into the SIG Steroids, we are organising a brief meeting during BES 2008 in Harrogate and we will circulate details of time and location to SIG members closer to the date. At this meeting the aims of the SIG will be reviewed, updated and plans for the future discussed. Please come along armed with suggestions and ideas, there is a great deal we can, with your help, achieve.
