People's Petition: Supporting Animal Research in the UK

THE COALITION FOR MEDICAL PROGRESS: SUPPORTING MEDICAL RESEARCH IN THE UK

The Coalition for Medical Progress (CMP) has launched The People's Petition,  an online campaign offering people the chance to register support for medical research using animals. It was set up after the CMP received a suggestion from a member of the public who wanted to create a means by which 'the silent majority' could express their support for this research.

Those who believe that this research, carried out under stringent animal welfare standards, is essential to the health and quality of life of humans and animals, are  encouraged to 'sign up' online to three statements:

  1. That medical research is essential for developing safe and effective medical and veterinary treatments, and requires some studies that use animals
  2. That, where there is no alternative available, medical research using animals should continue in the UK
  3. That people involved in medical research using animals have a right to work and live without fear of intimidation or attack.

The CMP does not plan to send the signatories to anyone, nor will the signatures be visible on the site. Individuals will be able to sign up by registering a first name and town of residence, plus a valid email address, all of which will be stored centrally and privately. The website will then give a running total of the number of people who have signed up.
