Society for Endocrinology - a world-leading authority on hormones

Jubilee Medal Lecture: Having graduated in biochemistry at the University of Manchester, Anne gained her PhD studying the cell biology of hybridomas.

Professor Anne White

Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology & Gastroenterology, School of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, University of Manchester

Having graduated in biochemistry at the University of Manchester, Anne gained her PhD studying the cell biology of hybridomas. This led to research into the development of hybridomas secreting monoclonal antibodies to steroid and peptide hormones, with the aim of improving diagnostic assays. From this evolved her long-term interest in the processing of pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) to ACTH and its application in the diagnosis of ACTH-related disorders. Along the way, a Royal Society Industry Fellowship (with AstraZeneca) gave her the opportunity to focus on hypothalamic POMC derived peptides in the regulation of body weight and metabolism. This led to her current interest/obsession with the effects of chronic glucocorticoid treatment on neuronal regulation of energy balance. Anne is currently Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Manchester. She has published over 160 publications, in addition to numerous chapters and reviews. Her commitment to researcher training led to posts as Dean for Graduate Education (1000 graduate students), and as post-graduate representative in the Medical Research Council Training and Career Group. She has held the posts of Treasurer and member of Council for the Society for Endocrinology and has been a Director of BioScientifica. Anne currently holds a national role as Academic Director of Higher Specialist Scientist Training for healthcare scientists.
