Research Fellow, University of Birmingham

22 Mar 2011

A full time research fellow position is available for 3 years which is funded by the Wellcome Trust. The post holder will be part of a multi-disciplinary research team investigating the role of DHEA sulfation in the pre-receptor regulation of androgen excess led by Professor Wiebke Arlt within the Centre for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism.

The successful candidate will join a multi-disciplinary team focussing on the pre-receptor regulation of sex steroid action fuelled by the discovery of human mutations in P450 oxidoreductase (Lancet 2004) and PAPS synthase (N Engl J Med 2009). He/she will perform and develop in vitro and ex vivo assays, employing a wide array of biochemical, molecular and cell biology techniques, and have the opportunity for advanced training in genetics in collaboration with the OCDEM Oxford. He/she will work at the interface of biology and medicine and contribute to the development of novel concepts in a vibrant interdisciplinary environment.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in Biology, Biomedical Science or a related subject. Experience in steroid endocrinology as well as additional expertise in genetics (e.g. MSc degree) are a plus. Similarly desirable are experience and success in writing and publishing scientific papers in high quality journals and a commitment to an academic career. Please direct informal enquiries to: w.arlt@bham.ac.uk, tel: 0121 415 8716. The start date for the post is 1 May 2011.
