There is now substantial evidence that cardiovascular disease has an origin in early development and that poor maternal diet during pregnancy can have a detrimental effect on the cardiovascular function of the offspring. Applications are invited to apply for a Gerald Kerkut Trust funded 3 year PhD studentship starting in October 2009 to investigate the vascular and endothelial dysfunction associated with maternal diet during pregnancy and the role of statins to correct this. The student will be based within the Developmental Origins of Health & Disease of the School of Medicine, in an active research grouping investigating the relationships between early environment and chronic diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis in adult life. The student will undertake their research project in the research laboratories of the Institute of Developmental Science, School of Medicine, located on the Southampton General Hospital site. They will receive training in a wide range of techniques, including the assessment of vascular function using myography, histology, molecular biology as well as the faculty's postgraduate training programme.

The studentship is funded by the Gerald Kerkut Charitable Trust and covers tuition fees for UK/EU students and a maintenance grant paid at current BBSRC rates. Applicants should have, or be expected to obtain, a First or Upper Second class Honours degree in Physiology, Pharmacology or related Biological Science.
