Society for Endocrinology - a world-leading authority on hormones

Research Training Fellowship, Manchester

11 May 2009

Applications are invited to host a BRC Research Training Fellowship (RTF) in one of the biomedical research priority areas for Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust - Genetics, Developmental Medicine, Cardiovascular Medicine, Musculoskeletal Medicine and Diabetes & Endocrinology.

The project will be based on longitudinal data from the European Male Ageing Study, the largest prospective cohort study of the endocrinology of ageing in men in the world. The work in this fellowship will be to validate criteria for diagnosis of late onset hypogonadism using criteria we established with the cross-sectional baseline data in 3200 elderly men and documenting interval (4 yr) changes in the same men in hormone levels (testosterone, oestradiol, dihydrotestosterone, LH and FSH), and phenotype as well as factors that predict deterioration or improvement in gonadal status.

Appointments are expected to run for three years: registration will initially be for a MPhil, with continued funding to complete a PhD being subject to rigorous review within the BRC Training Academy. During the first year, successful applicants will be expected to work with their supervisor to apply for an external fellowship. RTFs will become members of the BRC Faculty and have access to training supportvia the BRC Training Academy. Projects will be based in research and clinical.environments within the Trust and University. Generic training will be provided by existing postgraduate research schemes within the Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences (FMHS), in addition to training opportunities provided centrally by the BRC Faculty and Central Manchester Foundation Trust.
