The Nurse and Clinical Committee would like to update members on recent changes to the supply of emergency hydrocortisone injections in the UK.
Discontinuation of Hydrocortisone Sodium Phosphate Injection
ADVANZ Pharma has confirmed that hydrocortisone sodium phosphate 100 mg/mL solution for injection has been permanently discontinued due to manufacturing difficulties.
Emergency treatment remains available
Importantly, treatment for adrenal crisis remains available.
Emergency hydrocortisone can still be administered using hydrocortisone sodium succinate powder for reconstitution, which continues to be supplied in the UK. This formulation works in exactly the same way in the body but must be mixed with sterile water immediately before injection.
We recognise that this preparation involves additional steps and may feel more challenging, particularly during a time-critical emergency.
