Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogues are generating interest in the up-to-date management of diabetes. Some research focuses on their potential endocrine impact.
This review by Monney et al. thoroughly evaluates the role of GLP-1 in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as PCOS is associated with various hormonal, reproductive and metabolic alterations, including androgen excess, ovulatory disorders and a hyperinsulinaemic state. GLP-1 receptor analogues are discussed in the context of a variety of features of PCOS and their overall impact in each, including weight gain, various scorings and insulin resistance. This opens up an attractive option for this often under-treated disease.
