Society for Endocrinology - a world-leading authority on hormones

The Society for Endocrinology endorses research projects by application reviewed by the Research Working Group and ratified by the Clinical Committee of the Society. The Society reviews the endorsed projects annually. If you would like to get in touch about endorsement for a project, please email [email protected].

Project 1: DEKODE - Endorsement Approved in September 2025

DEKODE is a cloud-based surveillance system revolutionising how hospitals monitor and improve diabetes emergency care, including DKA, HHS, and Hypoglycaemia. Through centralised data collection and analysis, DEKODE empowers clinical teams to identify trends, benchmark performance, and drive real-time improvements in patient outcomes.

Now active in 40+ hospitals across the UK and internationally, DEKODE is formally endorsed by the Society for Endocrinology (SfE), the Association of British Clinical Diabetologists (ABCD), and NHS GIRFT.

This dynamic platform delivers granular insights into diabetes management, enabling hospitals to optimise care pathways, reduce variation, and share best practices across sites. By joining DEKODE, hospitals save time, resources, and funding, while contributing to a collaborative, data-driven network dedicated to improving patient care.

DEKODE builds on what hospitals already do best: routine audits and quality improvement projects (QIPs). Instead of setting up separate audits for DKA or other diabetes emergencies, hospitals can directly enter pseudonymised data into DEKODE’s secure, cloud-based system.

Once a centre contributes at least 12 months of data, it gains access to a dedicated online dashboard – a personalised webpage displaying key, standardised metrics such as:

  • Time to DKA resolution
  • Fluids prescribed
  • Glucose, ketone, and electrolyte monitoring
  • Complications
  • Reasons for patients to stay in the hospitals post-resolution

These insights allow hospitals to track performance over time, benchmark against peers, and rapidly identify areas for improvement in line with national guidelines.

DEKODE also provides a launchpad for early career researchers, offering opportunities to gain valuable experience in data analysis, presentations, publications, and grant writing. Participants can even register as an Associate Principal Investigator (PI) with the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).

This is a six-month, in-work training experience designed to strengthen CVs and build practical research skills.

Project 2: A mixed-methods study to develop a European Position Statement on self-management and patient education for people living with Adrenal Insufficiency - Endorsement approved in June 2025

This mixed-methods study explores perspectives of endocrinologists and endocrine nurses on the management of adrenal insufficiency and aims to inform the development of a consensus-based European Position Statement on patient education and self-management using Delphi methodology.

Adrenal Insufficiency is a chronic condition requiring lifelong glucocorticoid replacement therapy. Patients with adrenal insufficiency are at risk of adrenal crisis, which can be life-threatening without prompt parenteral hydrocortisone administration.

Despite patient education initiatives, adrenal crises remain frequent and poorly prevented. While patient-reported needs are documented, robust evidence from clinicians’ perspectives are lacking. This study fills that gap and aims to provide pan-European consensus on best practices.

Sequential mixed-methods study including a cross-sectional survey, qualitative interviews, Nominal Group Technique (NGT) meetings, and a Delphi consensus process.

Development of a European Position Statement on best practice for patient education and self-management support for people living with adrenal insufficiency.
