Join our prizes and awards working group

Help your Society to look at how we reward excellence through its prizes and awards

The Society is a wonderful community of members from science, nursing and medicine across the UK and abroad. Prizes and Awards are a very important and prestigious part of the Society’s work. There are however concerns about apparent imbalances in the characteristics of our awardees - for example, their gender and the location and type of the organisation in which they work - and hence a perception that our awards not as inclusive as they should be.

As part of our ongoing work to increase participation and representation we are planning to address this issue by undertaking a full review of all our Prizes and Awards in a member-led working group. This group will identify how best to recognise members for their achievements and ensure that the Society offers a fair opportunity for all members to apply and/or nominate their peers for such recognition. This group will make recommendations to Council in late 2024.

All members of the Society are invited to apply to join this membership working group. In keeping with the theme of inclusion, we particularly want to encourage applications from members in under-represented demographic groups including those in the regions and / or hospitals / universities without strong existing representation on our committees. We are interested in having members who have won prizes and awards in the past, as well as those who have not yet received recognition from the Society for their work.

You do not need any specific experience but should be keen to take an active role in this important work. The working group will hold 3-4 meetings, starting in early 2024 and aim to complete some tasks between meetings. We expect to hold one face to face meeting, the remainder will be virtual.

Please complete the application form below by 5pm Thursday 25 January 2024.

Membership of the group will be announced before the end of January.
