Public Engagement Grant

To support organisation, production and delivery of outreach activities, aimed at school children and/or the general public.

You can apply here for a grant to support your work.

We want everybody to have a better understanding of hormones and their impacts including teachers, students, journalists and policy-makers.

Through its members, the Society is an authoritative source of expert information on endocrinology.

What are we looking for?

The Society's website, You and Your Hormones website, is one of the world’s top-ranked, online resources for the public to learn about endocrinology, and is used by millions of people annually. It recently received the Association of Science Education Green Tick, ensuring that more teachers use You and Your Hormones as a reference guide for teaching primary and secondary pupils in the UK.

For the next round, we are encouraging applications that may be suitable as resources for our You and Your Hormones website and help to engage more people with endocrinology and its impact.

Proposals fitting with this theme might include, but are not restricted to:

Hands-on activities that can be used in classrooms or during home schooling (including resources such as worksheets, factsheets or quizzes) e.g. Make your own body clock
Endocrine-themed science practicals e.g. Testing blood sugar level
Diagrams and images to enhance You and Your Hormones articles
Short, YouTube-style videos or podcasts
Interactive online games

If you have any other ideas for public engagement outside this theme, please do still apply for the grant.

What funding is available?

We have up to £1,000 available per application.

This funding can be used for travel to outreach projects, production of materials/videos/diagrams or a full public engagement event. You can also use the grant to collaborate with others on a larger project.

You can apply for £1,000 or a smaller amount:

£100 could provide materials for the production of hands-on activities for schools
£500 could support an exhibition stand at a public event
£750 could fund a workshop for schools and colleges
£1,000 could support a larger project in collaboration with other organisations

If your proposal is over £100, please provide a justification of your costs.

What have previous grants funded?

An interactive, science-themed dance, performed live and shared online, in collaboration with a performance company
Level Up Human, a podcast panel show, was partially supported by a grant
Funded a hybrid Endocrinology Masterclass at the University of Birmingham that aimed to develop local school children's awareness of science and endocrinology through fun and engaging activities

The next deadlines are at 11:59am GMT on Wednesday 22 March 2023 and 11:59am BST on Wednesday 20 September 2023.

Value

Up to £1,000. The Society welcomes applications for lesser amounts to support smaller initiatives, including travel costs to local schools and printing of materials.

Eligibility

These grants are available to Full and Early Career Members. Full Members need to have held membership for a minimum of one year; Early Career Members need to have held membership for a minimum of six months at the time of application.
This grant is designed for initiatives targeting school children or members of the general public. Initiatives aimed at patients will not be considered for funding through this scheme.
In exceptional circumstances, or for small amounts, applicants may request marking of their application before the stated deadline.

Conditions relating to the grant/award

All applications are marked by the Public Engagement Committee
Only legitimate public engagement activities will be considered. The definition of a ‘public engagement activity’ will be at the discretion of the grant panel, whose decision is final.
One application for a Public Engagement Grant may be made in each of the two rounds.
The Society requires one written report (500 words) on the activity and how the grant benefited the public, endocrine science and the applicant, no later than three months after completion of the project. Elements of the report may be shared via Society communications as examples of best practice.
The Society reserves the right to have a staff representative attend the activity if deemed appropriate.
By accepting funding, the awardee gives the Society for Endocrinology all intellectual property rights to any material created as a result of the grant funding.
The awardee agrees to recognise the Society for Endocrinology’s intellectual property rights if re-using material in part or full, created as a result of the grant funding.
Applicants must state all sources of funding that they are currently in receipt of in relation to the proposed public engagement activity, in addition to previous Society Public Engagement Grants, on the application form.
Funds awarded are final and do not include overheads.
The project must be completed by 12 months after the award date.
Grants cannot be retrospectively awarded.
The decision of the grant panel is final and not subject to appeal.
The successful applicants must recognise the award on their departmental website with a link to the Society website for a minimum of six months after receipt of the grant, and must also recognise the award during the activity and in literature and publicity material where appropriate. The Society is able to provide materials such as banner stands, T-shirts and flyers to help with this.
The Society can help to publicise an event via a number of channels, subject to approval by the applicant and the grant panel.
Grant awardees will be asked to share with the Society any tools or resources, developed or used as part of Society-funded initiatives (as appropriate).
Honorary, Senior and Student Members are not eligible to apply for grants.
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
In the event of your application being unsuccessful, we are not able to provide feedback.
