The department's research is directed towards a better understanding of the molecular and cellular events that mediate mammalian chemical communication, specifically those events underlying complex social behaviours such as aggression, maternal care, and mating. The overall goal is to integrate investigations aimed at understanding molecular membrane mechanisms underlying the recognition of specific signaling molecules in the olfactory system – such as pheromones and hormones – with endocrine and immune function.

The research program combines electrophysiology, physiological analyses with confocal imaging, neuroanatomy, immunocytochemistry, and behaviour tests to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie the encoding of chemosensory signals. The successful candidates will have completed the equivalent of a master’s degree in biology, physics, medicine or related areas. Applicants should have a strong interest in electrophysiology and/or in vivo imaging. Ability and willingness to communicate and collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary environment are essential.
