Department of Health advice on hydrocortisone sodium phosphate shortage

08 Dec 2017

There is currently a shortage of hydrocortisone sodium phosphate 100 mg injection (formerly branded as Efcortesol injection). The sole licensed UK supplier, Concordia, does not expect to be able to supply this product again until late in 2018.

The Department of Health (DOH) have commissioned some clinical advice on this matter and Solu-Cortef (hydrocortisone sodium succinate) 100 mg, manufactured by Pfizer, is considered an acceptable alternative during this time.

Due to differences in formulation and administration the DOH have also commissioned this guidance on the use of Solu-Cortef.

These videos demonstrate the preparation techniques for Solu-Cortef with a standard syringe, safety syringe and a safety needle.
