The 3 year studentship will be funded by the MRC as part of a European collaborative grant. The title of the project is: "The effects of prenatal stress exposure on child HPA-axis function and neurodevelopment: A gene-environment interaction study." The aims are to study which prenatal stress risk factors, including the role of work, result in earlier delivery, reduced birth weight and adverse child neurodevelopment; and also the role of specific gene polymorphisms in the vulnerability or resistance to the effects of prenatal stress. The student will focus on the role of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis and cortisol, in mediating outcomes, as there is good evidence from animal studies, and some from humans, on its role in the effects of prenatal stress on child development. Applicants should have at least an upper second first degree in either a biological science or psychology. Funding is available immediately (£18,000 pa plus EU fees) and ideally the student would start in October 2008.
