The programme for the day visit is entirely up to you and may, if travel schedule allows, involve an evening dinner. All costs for the visit except travel and accommodation are borne by the host institution.
About Professor Aart Jan (AJ) van der Lely
Aart Jan (AJ) van der Lely is Emeritus Professor of Endocrinology at Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Over the course of his career, he has played a prominent role in both national and international endocrinological research and leadership.
He has served on the editorial boards of several leading journals, including Current Opinion in Endocrine and Metabolic Research, Clinical Endocrinology (Oxford), Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, Clinical Interventions in Aging, Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Endocrinology, and Nature Reviews Endocrinology.
He has held numerous leadership roles, including former president of the Dutch Endocrine Society and former secretary of the Section of Endocrinology at the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). He has also served on the board of the International Society of Endocrinology and was a member of the Global Task Force of the Endocrine Society (USA).
Within the European Society of Endocrinology, he served first as treasurer and later as president. He was the inaugural president of the European Hormone Society and also chaired the Pituitary Society. He is an honorary member of the European Society of Endocrinology.
Finally, he was cofounder /shareholder of several successful biotech companies (Alizé SA and Amolyt Pharma).
He has received several prestigious awards throughout his career. In 2022, he was Honoured with the Geoffrey Harris Prize by the European Society of Endocrinology, as well as the Luiz César Póvoa Prize by the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism. In 2020, he received the NVE Award from the Dutch Society of Endocrinology. He was also appointed Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
He is currently Chair of the Board of Bioscientifica Ltd. His principal research interests are pituitary diseases and the role of gut hormones in health and disease.
